HIV Care Center Overview

History

Medical care of the patient with HIV or AIDS changed tremendously in the spring of 1996. A new understanding of the disease process and newer diagnostic studies that allowed prediction of progression as well as monitoring effectiveness of therapy became available. Development of new drugs in all 3 drug categories expanded options for treatment.

Combination therapy typically with 3 different drugs was found to be the most effective method of controlling HIV replication to its lowest level. All of this information combined makes it more important than ever for individuals who may be at risk for HIV to be tested and to seek care. We recommend that you choose a medical provider with intensive experience in HIV/AIDS as studies have shown that patients do better in this setting.

Dr. Wade has been involved in HIV care since the HIV epidemic was first recognized. She has cared for hundreds of patients to date and takes a special interest in remaining aware of all the newest developments and newest medications. Dr. Li-Espino has also been very active in HIV/AIDS care since joining the group in June 2000. Patients with HIV are accepted on a primary care basis by self-referral. If you have a primary care physician, for instance a family practice physician or an internal medicine physician, consultation may be sought to ascertain whether any additional input or changes to your therapy may be helpful. Mission

The mission of the HIV Care Center is to provide quality state-of-the-art medical care, psychosocial services, and comprehensive education to HIV-infected individuals in Northwest Florida.

The HIV Care Center operates in conjunction with a medical practice that currently provides HIV/AIDS care in an underserved area. The Center for Prevention and Treatment of Infections (CPTI) is a private Infectious Diseases practice consisting of two physicians, two physician assistants and support staff who provide care to patients with HIV/AIDS. The HIV Care Center contracts with Lutheran Services of Northwest Florida to provide Ryan White medical care to uninsured HIV+ patients. In addition, the CPTI physicians provide free care to uninsured patients with HIV/AIDS who require hospitalization. This is a part of care that is not covered or reimbursed by the Ryan White Care Act funds.
